Esaba community witnessed one of the most memorable swearing-in and carnival ceremonies ever held on the Island of Ughievwen, Delta State, on January 2, 2026. The historic occasion marked not only the formal inauguration of a new community leadership led by Mr. Sunday Joseph Evesor Darah but also a celebration of unity, culture, and renewed hope for development.
As captured vividly in the edited video by an enthusiastic researcher and gifted singer, Onoriode Ufuoma Peter, the atmosphere was electrifying. The community came alive with colourful traditional attires, cultural dances, music, and an outpouring of joy that reflected the peopleās pride in Urhoboās heritage and future. The colourful procession from the Community Town Hall, immediately after the swearing-in ceremony, to the Community Square, the venue of the carnival was led by Professors G.G. Darah, J.T. Agberia, and Rev. Fr. Dr. Christopher Ekabo, JP, whose presence added prestige, moral authority, and intellectual depth to the historic occasion. Sons and daughters of the community, both at home and in the diaspora, gathered in solidarity to witness the dawn of a new chapter.
The swearing-in ceremony symbolised a collective recommitment to progress, peace, and inclusive leadership. Speakers at the event emphasised unity, grassroots development, and the need for the new executive committee to build on the legacies of past administrations while embracing transparency and accountability.
Esabaās neighbouring communities: Otutuama, Ophorigbala, Ighrogun, Ukperheren, Ekrota, Emadadja, and Ubogo were adequately represented, underscoring the spirit of unity, solidarity, and cordial inter-community relations within the Udu and Ughievwen areas.
Beyond the formal proceedings, the carnival showcased the rich cultural identity of Esaba, reinforcing its place as a beacon of cultural pride within Ughievwen Kingdom. The festivities served as a reminder that culture remains a powerful tool for cohesion and community mobilisation.
Indeed, the January 2 event reaffirmed Esabaās reputation as a shining light for Ughievwen, one that continues to inspire hope, strengthen communal bonds, and project a positive image of the kingdom to the wider Delta State and beyond.
