The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced that people who receive honorary doctorate degrees can no longer use the title “Dr” before their names.
According to new guidelines released by the Commission, only those who have earned a doctoral degree through academic study or are certified medical doctors are allowed to use the “Dr” title.
The NUC explained that honorary doctorate recipients can instead add the award after their names, such as “Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa)” or “D.Sc. (h.c.).” The Commission also introduced stricter rules for universities.
It stated that only institutions that have successfully graduated at least one set of PhD students are qualified to award honorary doctorates.
In addition, universities are limited to giving out a maximum of three honorary degrees per convocation.
The NUC warned that any school or individual who ignores these new directives will face sanctions.
