- The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening cooperation among state legislatures as a pathway to improved governance and effective representation across Nigeria.
Guwor made the pledge on Wednesday while receiving members of the Anambra State House of Assembly who are in Asaba for a three-day legislative retreat focused on knowledge sharing and institutional collaboration.
Welcoming the visiting lawmakers, the Delta Speaker emphasized that sustained engagement among state legislatures is essential for promoting best legislative practices, strengthening democratic institutions, and enhancing the capacity of lawmakers to effectively represent their constituents.
He noted that retreats and inter-parliamentary exchanges provide a valuable platform for legislators to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and develop strategies that can improve governance in their respective states.
According to him, Delta and Anambra State share long-standing historical, social, and economic relationships that make collaboration between their legislative institutions even more significant.
“Beyond sharing geographical boundaries, Delta and Anambra maintain deep historical affiliations and vibrant economic ties.
These bonds make cooperation between our legislative institutions both natural and necessary,” Guwor stated.
The Speaker, who was accompanied by principal officers and members of the Assembly, also invited the visiting lawmakers to observe the Assembly’s plenary session as part of activities scheduled for their visit.
He assured the delegation of the Delta Assembly’s readiness to continue building partnerships with other state legislatures across the country to strengthen legislative processes and improve service delivery.
Responding, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, expressed appreciation to Guwor and members of the Delta Assembly for the warm reception and solidarity extended to the delegation.
Udeze, who was recently elected Vice Chairman of the Conference of Speakers for the South-East Zone, said the retreat would feature sessions on legislative procedures, governance strategies, and peer-learning engagements aimed at strengthening the capacity of lawmakers for effective lawmaking and oversight.
