Umaru Fintiri, Governor of Adamawa State, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move seen as a major political shift in the state ahead of the next presidential election.
In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri announced that he joined the APC in what he described as the “developmental interest” of Adamawa people.
He also revealed that members of his cabinet, lawmakers, and key officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state moved with him to the APC.
The governor’s defection significantly strengthens the APC’s structure and influence in Adamawa, traditionally regarded as the political base of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Political observers say the development could affect Atiku’s calculations as the next presidential election approaches.
With the state’s governor and major PDP structures now aligned with the APC, the ruling party is expected to gain stronger grassroots support in Adamawa.
Fintiri maintained that his decision was driven by the need to attract more federal collaboration and accelerate development in the state.
