Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Saturday inaugurated major infrastructure projects at Southern Delta University as part of activities marking the institution’s first convocation ceremony.
The newly commissioned projects include a block of modern science laboratories, a Faculty of Computing Complex, the Pa James Odhokpa Izomor Engineering Workshops, male and female hostels, and a Faculty of Medical Sciences building constructed by the Delta State Government.
The engineering workshops, which comprise 10 fully equipped units, were donated by Engineer Godwin Izomor in memory of his father, Pa James Izomor.
Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude to God for the milestone and praised the university’s rapid development within a short period.
He described the privately funded engineering workshops as a shining example of investing in education and human capital rather than luxury. He commended the Izomor family for their gesture and prayed for continued blessings upon them.
The Governor also applauded the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jacob Oboreh, the Governing Council, and the management for their prudent and transparent use of the university’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
He noted that the careful management of funds had resulted in visible infrastructural growth and encouraged other university leaders to emulate the model.
Oborevwori reaffirmed that the institution has the right to control and utilize its IGR for development purposes.
On the Faculty of Medical Sciences building, the Governor recalled inspecting the project last year and promising to provide a befitting structure for the faculty.
He expressed satisfaction that the promise had been fulfilled, describing the project as a major step forward for medical education and scientific research in the state.
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Jacob Oboreh said many of the projects were executed through internally generated revenue and direct labour, a strategy that helped reduce costs and maintain quality. He thanked the Governor for consistent funding and support, which he said had enabled the young university to achieve significant progress.
The inauguration of the projects was one of the key highlights of the maiden convocation ceremony, underscoring the Delta State Government’s commitment to strengthening tertiary education and providing modern learning facilities across the state.
