Two brothers returning home from Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) lessons were harassed around Central Garage in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State for being mistaken for “yahoo boys.”
The two brothers, Mr. Anigboro-Brorhie Divine Oghenebrukevwe and Mr. Anigboro-Brorhie Destiny Ogheneorhome, were harassed on July 22, 2022, when the police mistook them for “yahoo boys” because of how they were dressed and the bags they were carrying.
It was learnt that Divine and Destiny were extremely concerned when they were stopped, having known how the police physically abuse, unlawfully detain, and sometimes kill young men suspected to be “yahoo boys.”
It could be recalled that sometime between 2018 and 2019, the police targeted “yahoo boys” through their division called SARS. However, due to protests against the corruption and excessive violence of SARS, this division was disbanded in 2020.
According to a reliable source, the police took their bags, phones, and laptops and searched them thoroughly, looking for any incriminating items to prove if they were involved in fraudulent activities.
The source explained that the police had requested the full names of everyone they stopped, which was how he came to know the names of the two brothers.
The source added that while the police instructed Divine and Destiny to open their electronic devices so they could check their online activity, they warned them not to hide anything from them while putting on an intimidating face.
Speaking further, the source said that when the police could not find anything, they threw their bags back at them and asked them to go, adding that fortunately for them, the tricycle they had boarded was still waiting, and they left.
