The Delta State Police have killed a suspected kidnap kingpin, Liberty Kunu, aka “Commander Liberty”, in a shootout with his gang.
According to the Police in a briefing said the incident followed weeks of intelligence-driven operations after several complaints linked Kunu and his gang to kidnapping, abduction, and armed robbery in Sapele and neighbouring communities.
Police said their operatives repelled the attack, forcing the assailants to flee with gunshot injuries as the police operational vehicle was riddled with bullets during the exchange.
Kunu was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital, and his body has been deposited at the General Hospital, Sapele.
Other arrested suspects remain in custody, while investigations continue to track down the fleeing gang members.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, reiterated the command’s commitment to combating kidnapping and violent crime across the state, urging residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
