Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, who represents Delta South Senatorial District, has expressed support for the people of Ozoro Kingdom following the disturbing incident that happened during a festival in Oramudu Community.
In a statement, the senator said he visited the traditional ruler of Ozoro, HRM Anthony Ogbogbo Ibuka I, at his palace to get firsthand information about the situation.
He said the visit strengthened his commitment to ensuring justice and protecting the dignity of women.
Senator Onowakpo strongly condemned the reported assault on women during the festival, describing it as criminal, barbaric, and a serious violation of human rights. He stressed that such acts have no place in any society.
He also dismissed claims that there is any ārape festivalā in Ozoro or Isoko land, explaining that the culture of the people promotes peace, respect, and protection of women.
According to him, the incident was carried out by a few criminal elements who hijacked a legitimate cultural event.
The senator praised community members, local leaders, vigilantes, and the police for their quick response in rescuing victims and restoring order.
He called on the Nigeria Police Force to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that all those involved are arrested and prosecuted.
He emphasized that justice must be done and seen to be done.
Senator Onowakpo urged community leaders to put better measures in place to monitor festivals and prevent such incidents in the future.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
He concluded by saying that any form of violence against women is unacceptable and must be completely eradicated from society.
