Alleged Ughelli North ADC Congress Attacks, Party lead Submits Petition to Police

A petition has been submitted to the Inspector General of Police alleging a violent attack by suspected thugs during an African Democratic Congress (ADC) congress held on April 9, 2026, in Afiesere, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
According to the petition, Hon Julius Akpovoka Efeni, a leader and chieftain of ADC in Ughelli, the attackers—allegedly led by Mr. Oghenegueke Ugbarugba and others—stormed the venue at a Catholic Church premises, disrupted the meeting, and launched a coordinated assault on participants.
The petition further claims that the assailants attempted to assassinate a prominent politician and chieftain of an ADC in Ughelli North LGA, Hon. Julius Efeni Akpovoka, who narrowly escaped with the assistance of party members.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the congress had been peaceful before the armed group arrived, reportedly wielding guns and cutlasses.
In the ensuing chaos, about 10,000 ADC membership cards valued at ₦20 million were allegedly seized, while more than 700 chairs were destroyed.
The violence reportedly escalated as the attackers regrouped and carried out additional assaults at another location, leaving several individuals injured, including victims who sustained machete wounds.
Among those listed as victims are Mr. Ezekiel Johnson, Mrs. Stella Emeghene, Miss Alfred Gift, Proper Obare, Belle Ogheneruomu, Favour Oforishe, and Onos Tedd Ekugbawa Ovuefeonye.
The petition also alleges that the attackers later targeted Akpovoka’s residence and filling station, where properties were vandalized and valuables—including cash estimated at ₦7 million, laptops, and mobile phones—were taken.
The assailants were further accused of issuing death threats during the incidents.
Victims have reportedly filed complaints with the police and obtained medical reports to document their injuries. Organizers of the congress stated that security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), had been notified prior to the event.
Legal representatives of the victims are calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved, emphasizing that the alleged acts of violence and threats to life must not go unaddressed.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
